An Elk River Boy made good

Jason Ricci Returns to areaJason Ricci returned to Parkersburg to play at the Front Row Thursday. As always, he and his band put on a fabulous show.Simply put, Jason is the best harmonica player alive. I rank him as one of the two best contemporary players, the other being Igor Flach, who died recently. Jason played to a packed house at the Front Row, despite the fact it was a Thursday night. Jason always puts on a marvelous show, he even played his guts out once while suffering with a broken rib. “It's great and interesting to hear what a harmonica can do. People are really into the music,” said Dana Campbell, Parkersburg resident and one of my harmonica students. I encourage my students to hear him perform, just to see what is possible with a harmonica. Jason has graciously agreed to judge the Mid-Ohio Valley Harmonica championship in Belleville on Sept. 20. That's the kind of guy Jason is, I asked him and he said he would come. Mind you, he's driving from Nashville just to do this and he's not making one cent from it. The exact time for the contest will be set in July, but the inaugural Mid-Ohio Valley Harmonica Championship will be held in the early afternoon of Sept. 20, 2008 at the Belleville Homecoming Grounds during the homecoming. Two songs, five minutes, you can play by yourself or with one accompanist. Besides the competition, there will be harmonica-laden concerts, which started off as just a concert with my bands, me on the harp with The Elk River Bluegrass Boys, then me and my cousin Roger Adkins, The Deadliners acoustic blues duo. But, Jason said he would play a little bluegrass on stage with the Elk River Boys. Now that's something you don't see EVER, Jason Ricci playing bluegrass! Check out the link for the video Jason and I made Thursday about our favorite harmonicas. His is a Hohner Marine Band DeLuxe (only made for one year, 1932). Mine is a Seydel Bandmaster, made in the 1930s.
