Methods of Distraction

Movies and MusicFrom the very beginning of film music has played a very strong role. Piano filled in to keep audiences' attention before technology rolled around to allow actor's voices to be heard, but the change did not hamper the importance of music in a movie.I have seen some great films that were only enhanced by their soundtrack. Would the "Star Wars" films be as memorable without the "Imperial March"? How about "Jaws" or even 1967's "The Graduate." No one can tell me they don't invision a young Dustin Hoffman walking throught a lonely crowd when they hear or even think of "Scarborough Fair." It has been said that "Moulin Rouge" (2001) from acclaimed director Baz Luhrmann brought back the movie musical, which was so popular in the "golden age of Hollywood." Since then, there have been a number of musicals, including the Oscar winner "Chicago." Most recently, the film, "Across the Universe" was released on DVD and sales of the film's soundtrack skyrocketted to the top of sales charts online. The film is set in the '60s to music by The Beatles and other popular artists of the era. The cast did a marvelous job of adapting to the true spirit of the works. Who would have known that a tiny actress could belt out "I Want To Hold Your Hand" with such power? Would "Titanic" (1997) have been as memorable without the almost annoying "My Heart Will Go On," which not only won many awards, but took the heavily orchestrated sountrack to Numer 1 on sales charts? I think not.
