An Elk River Boy made good

POSTED:Sat, March 22, 2008 @ 1:53PM

Answers to West Virginia History Quiz

Alert reader Wes Cline answered the question about which West Virginian made the 1,538-yard shot at Adobe Walls in 1874. It was Billy Dixon.

The first white man to record a blues song was a Frank Hutchison, Logan County coal miner who recorded for Okeh records in the 1920s.

The most famous person to represent Kanawha County in state government was Daniel Boone.

George Washington didn't see a single buffalo on the Ohio River in 1770. What interesting is that Christopher Gist saw and killed several on his trip down the Ohio in 1752. Washington killed his buffalo, the extinct Eastern Bison, on the Kanawha River, probably in Mason County.

The West Virginian who often gets mentioned in the same breath as Cartheginian General Hannibal for being only one of a handful of military leaders to acheive a double envelopment is Daniel Morgan. He wasn't born in WV, but he lived here.

Bill Blizzard led the army of coal miners marching on Logan County, culminating in the battle of Blair Mountain. His son, the younger Bill Blizzard, recently published an excellent book on the Mine Wars.

The West Virginian who was experimenting with radio communication around the time of the Civil War and granted the first wireless patent is Mahlon Loomis.
