The Power, The Pirates

June 21, 2014 - Jay Bennett
As it nears vacation time for many, I thought I'd take a quick look at a couple of things — mainly the Pittsburgh Pirates and their Class A South Atlantic League affiliate the West Virginia Power.

After Friday afternoon's loss to the Chicago Cubs, the Pirates had a record of 35-38 and according to fangraphs.com they still have basically a 20 percent chance of reaching the postseason.

With every game being so critical, the Pirates have to figure out a way to turn around a record of 9-18 in day games. Pittsburgh also has played the most one-run games of any MLB team this season and sports a respectable 16-15 mark.

Don't forget about the W.Va. Power either. Despite a horrendous first half in the SAL, which included finishing last in the Northern Division with a 20-48 record and losing 14 games in a row to close the first half, the Power is 2-0 to start the second half.

Although there is no Gregory Polanco to watch, there are still some potential future Pirates to go take a look at. Of course, Polanco rocked the SAL in 2012 for the Power when he batted .325 with 26 doubles, six triples, 16 homers, 85 RBIs and 40 stolen bases.

Power catcher Reese McGuire, the 14th pick in the 2013 MLB draft, was one of two SAL All-Stars this year along with infielder Erich Weiss. McGuire is ranked as the Pirates' fourth best prospect by Baseball Prospectus and eighth best by Baseball America.

Even though he's currently on the disabled list, outfielder Austin Meadows has rankings of fourth by BA and seventh by BP. Meadows was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2013 draft.

Fellow outfielder Harold Ramirez is ranked 10th by BP and ninth by BA, while 6-foot-6 starting pitcher Luis Heredia is ranked ninth by BP and 10th by BA.
