Cure for the Common Breakup

May 12, 2014 - Amy Phelps
A spirited former flight attendant finds herself drawn to the small town of Black Dog Bay after her relationship ends in "Cure for the Common Breakup" by Beth Kendrick.

Summer has had strictly love 'em and leave 'em policy when it comes to relationships. So it's a surprise to hear from a friend that her pilot boyfriend is going to propose to her. Just as Summer is fixing her mind to say yes, a horrible plane crash happens. Summer is injured trying to save a child, and wakes up in the hospital to find not only is she not sure that she can be a flight attendant anymore, but her pilot boyfriend has rethought asking her to marry him and has decided he doesn't love her enough. Even more surprised by her broken heart, Summer checks out of the hospital and into the Better Off Bed-and-Breakfast in Black Dog Bay, a town famous for helping the broken-hearted recover. The Better Off isn't the only break-up healing place in town - there's the Eat Your Heart Out bakery, the Whinery bar, Retail Therapy boutique and more. Summer is soon captivated by the place, and the locals love her too after she stands up to a challenging local woman.

But Summer isn't just captivated by the town and her new friends, there's also the hot town mayor, Dutch Jansen, that she begins to fall for. Before she knows it, she's helping him plant roses, helping his teen sister learn how to drive and navigate the pitfalls of being a teen and just maybe, falling in love with the idea of family. But a wealthy local woman that Summer won't back down for has offered her a job, and the more Summer works for Hattie Huntington, she learns that she holds a grudge against Dutch's family, one that she may use Summer for. Can Summer get out of Hattie's grasp and stay in town with her new man?

This is a funny, highly addicting novel that will make pages fly as readers enjoy the antics of Summer and the fun cast of characters. You will wish that you too could recooperate from a bad breakup in Black Dog Bay. This is a perfect summer treat!

"Cure for the Common Breakup" is published by New American Library. It is $15 and 299 pages long.
