Landry Park by Bethany Hagen
March 31, 2014 - Amy Phelps
Regency romance gets a mashup with dystopian futures in "Landry Park" by Bethany Hagen.
Two hundred years into the future, the Chinese empire took over the West Coast of America. What is left of the United States has went back to a Regency-era world, where class standing is the only thing that matters. Madeline is born into priviledge, the daughter of one of the founding fathers of what is left of the country and their way of life. She wants to continue with her studies so she can become mistress of the Landry estate someday, but her father wants her to marry the right high-class man and produce an heir. But Madeline is beginning to question everything - whether or not the Rootless (the lower class) is as bad as everyone thinks, and what she wants for her future. When a wealthy young woman is attacked, the Rootless are blamed but Madeline knows the truth. As rumors of war begin to spread, Madeline is swept off her feet by David Dana, a Gentry who may not be all he seems. When the war comes, what side will she be on?
With its mix of Victorian and futuristic, the story will attract a lot of readers who enjoy both romance and adventure stories.
"Landry Park" is published by Dial. It is $17.99 and for ages 12 and up.
