Long Live the Queen

December 2, 2013 - Amy Phelps
Kate Locke ends her Immortal Empire series with "Long Live the Queen."

Xandra lives in an alternate reality where Queen Victoria is a vampire - and still on the throne. With an odd blend of modern day technology and Victorian style, Xandra's world is also torn by the vampires and werewolves who rule England, and the humans who are growing increasingly tired of being a snack. Xandra has also recently learned she is the Queen of the Goblins, creatures that are a mix of vampire and werewolf, and are feared by all.

Humans are starting to try to rise up against the "aristos" and those in power seem to be fighting amongst themselves, even as Xandra is trying to sort out her own kingdom. But when a new creature who looks just like her starts a terror-inducing run through the city, she must find out who the stranger is, and more importantly, who created her and why, before someone she cares about is killed and a civil war breaks out.

This is a stylish blend of alt-reality Victorian meets current day England with supernatural elements. Fans will find the ending fitting for Xandra and her friends and will bid a sad farewell to this world.

"Long Live the Queen" is published by Orbit. It is $17 and 308 pages long.
