IOS7 update is like the Super Bowl for geeks

September 19, 2013 - Art Smith
A major update was released Wednesday for Apple’s mobile devices and it caused a virtual meltdown of some networks around the country.

IOS7, the major update for iphones, ipads and ipod touches was made available yesterday afternoon. Many people that were simply using the Internet to get their job done soon felt the effect.

The update is fairly massive, both in the scope of what it changes on the devices, and in terms of the size of the file that you have to download.

The collective effect of thousands of people trying to download it at once lead to many people not being able to download it at all.

College campuses around the country reported issues with the Internet shortly after the download was available. Officials at Ohio University sent an email asking students to wait to download it after the Internet at the school quit functioning. Marietta College also sent a campus-wide email asking people to be patient because traffic on the statewide network that provides the Internet connection at the school was running at three times the normal level.

Apple servers appeared to have been overloaded at times as well. I tried several times to download the update in the evening through a Time-Warner connection; I finally gave up around 11 p.m. The update downloaded without any issues at around 6:30 this morning.

Several factors pushed people to download the update.

- It was well promoted because it is part of the new iphones.
- It is a complete upgrade of the operating system and contains a lot of new features.
- The price – it is free.

The fact that people will stand in line to get their hands on new technology is well documented. The ios7 update is no different, only this time the lines are virtual, not on the sidewalk.

If you haven’t updated your device, get in line. It’s worth it.

I never adopt a new version of an os when it comes out right away. I am already seeing people complaining about horrendous battery drains on their ipads and some owners of older hardware are reporting the phone almost becoming unusable. Granted this is more than likely due to apps needing an upgrade.

One thing a I dont like about ios7 is that it is too effeminate and wispy for my tastes. And the whole user experience from Apple is getting tired and boring.

I jumped ship back to Android and couldn't be happier. Android has improved alot since I had my first one. A Droid X.

Another thing the Android has over apple is the sd card slot.

Its insane what apple will charge for just a little extra memory.
