South's Lynch enjoys high jump
March 31, 2012 - Jay Bennett
No doubt about it, Mother Nature sure did give Parkersburg South a pass on Friday.
Luckily, the entire Erickson/Camden Clark Invitational track meet got in without a weather delay.
Even though the meet was comprised of just seven teams, there was plenty of talent on hand.
Obviously, the one person I enjoy watching a great deal anytime I get the chance is Emily Godwin of Buckhannon-Upshur. She didn't disappoint either as she took high-point honors by winning four events.
Another person I enjoy watching is Parkersburg South senior high jumper Garret Lynch, who finished third in the state last year behind champion Errin Baynes of Wheeling Park and his teammate Kody Geisel.
On Friday, Lynch won the high jump with an effort of 6 feet, 4 inches. He tried to get 6-6, but came up just short.
"I'm a little upset," Lynch said of not getting 6-6. "I'm trying to jump a little more consistent than I did last year, but I'll be all right."
Lynch said his best personal effort was going 6-8 indoors at Marietta.
"Last week I jumped 6-6 at PHS," he said. "I'm all right with it (the 6-4 win on Friday) because I'm more consistent than I jumped last year."
Of course, Lynch knows his success as a jumper comes not only from his natural abilities but also from coach Irwin DeGraef.
"Coach Irwin sets up with good practices," Lynch added. "Some days we do form workouts and then some days we just jump to see how high we can get.
"The most important, I think, are the form workouts and make sure you pay attention to what he says because he knows what he is doing."
