Teen romance takes a paranormal twist in two new books!
Can a past romance come alive again in the present? Mary Lindsey tackles this in "Shattered Souls."
Lenzi is worried she is becoming like her mentally ill father - hearing voices and seeing visions. But is it all in her mind or is it something else entirely? Her boyfriend, Zak, seems willing to stand by her. But when he takes her out to visit her father's grave on her birthday, drunkedly comes onto her and passes out, Lenzi begins to rethink everything. Especially when Alden walks into her life. Alden seems familiar to her and he reveals startling truths - Lenzi is a reincarnated "Speaker" - someone who talks to the dead and helps them to move on. The visions she has been seeing have been ghosts. And Alden is her "Protector" someone who keeps watch over her so nothing evil can attack her. The two are linked together for all eternity.
Lenzi struggles with all of this, not the least of which is her feelings for Alden, something he tells her has never been acted on in the past. And Zak doesn't like the strange new guy hanging around her. Meanwhile, an evil entity is back after Lenzi and she may not be able to escape this time. Will Lenzi choose Zak or Alden? Will she even get the chance?
I loved the premise behind this book and the romance was well-written. Teens should love this "fated" romance story with a bit of paranormal danger surrounding the would-be lovers.
"Shattered Souls" is published by Philomel. It is $16.99.
Bestselling author Deborah Cooke brings a story of a young dragon shapeshifter trying to survive high school and a battle with Mages in "Winging It."
Zoe just wants to be as normal as she can be, being the only female dragon shifter. She wants to invite her best friend, Meagan to her 16th birthday party, but her father is making it a shifter affair, and since she has to keep her abilities secret, she can't. This is putting a strain on Zoe and Meagan's friendship to the point where it might break. Meagan's angry at Zoe about all of her secrets and her new friends, but what can she do?
Meanwhile, the war between the Mages and the Dragons is heating up, and may come to a head at a Halloween party hosted by an apprentice Mage. Zoe knows there's danger surrounding her there, but when Meagan gets invited, Zoe doesn't want her friend caught in the crosshairs. Is Zoe going to have to save the day? Will she ever get a chance to hang out with hot rocker and would-be boyfriend Jared?
I liked this blend of paranormal and normal high school angst. Zoe's a fun character to cheer for, and I love dragons so this was the perfect fit.
"Winging It" is published by New American Library. It is $9.99.
