Online shopping has changed Main Street

December 13, 2011 - Art Smith
A drive down the main street of any America city will show things have changed dramatically in the last decade. Retail businesses have been dealt hard blows. One by the recession and another by the Internet.

The country, and the Mid-Ohio Valley are slowly emerging from the recession. The changes brought because of the Internet are here to stay, in fact the Internet, and shopping that takes place on it, will have even a larger impact as the economy improves.

Receipts this year on Cyber Monday, the traditional giant online shopping day that follows Black Friday, grew by more than 20 percent.

Online businesses predicted that yesterday, Dec. 12, would end up being a billion dollar online shopping day as well.

Online giants like Amazon and Apple have built very successful businesses by connecting buyers directly to the merchandise and then efficiently shipping the items directly to people’s home. Buy an ipad from Apple for instance and it will ship directly from the factory in China to your home in about three days without anyone locally asking, “can I help you?”

The travel, book, music, clothing, antique and dozens of other industries all have been affected greatly as shoppers shift their habits to the virtual stores and away from the ones that employ local people working in locations that pay local taxes and support the local economies.

A shopper driving through the Mid-Ohio Valley will pass dozens if not hundreds of empty storefronts. The recession brought down many of the businesses that once occupied them, others failed because the retail sector they operated in could run more efficiently on the web.

Online retailers undoubtedly will enjoy tidy profits this week. The last week, they will remind you, where they can guarantee that you stuff will arrive before Dec. 25.

The tides shift back to the brick and mortar stores next week. Remember with the “real” type of store items arrive at your house at the same time you do because they are beside you on front seat.
