Medical cannibis impact for employers

Recently on July 16, the first HR Timely Topics (HRTT) Lunch and Learn Event was held in downtown Parkersburg. Our featured speaker was Pamela J. Ferrell, Esq.; Bowles Rice LLP, who presented information on the West Virginia Medical Cannabis Act’s Impact on Employers.

Ms. Ferrell spoke to a local group of employers at the noontime event regarding West Virginia’s new Medical Cannabis Act, which became effective on July 1, 2019. Due to some delays at the State level, medical cannabis sales are not anticipated until at least October 2021. However, employers are already facing issues relating to medical cannabis and Ms. Ferrell shared insight as to how employers may be able to navigate this new and tricky terrain.

The HRTT Lunch and Learn Event was facilitated by HR Consulting Services, LLC (HRCS), a local Human Resources Consulting Firm, co-owned by my Business Partner, Sherry Long-Stevens and myself, which serves area employers of all sizes with their Human Resources re-engineering, structuring and development needs. At HRCS, we understand Human Resources requirements on employers are demanding and constantly changing. Because timely and relevant employment-related information is critical for employers to receive, we’ve established HR Timely Topics (HRTT) to help support employers in receiving pertinent employment information.

HRTT Lunch and Learn Events are employment-related informational sessions, which are intended to provide local employers with subject matter pertinent to their businesses and organizations. Relevant and timely topic information presented by Subject Matter Experts will be featured on a bi-monthly basis, however we may hold additional, special HRTT events depending on legislative activities and significance to West Virginia employers.

It’s important to us that employers be able to attend our events and receive information quickly, without taking too much time out of their business day; and so, HRTT Lunch and Learn events are designed as one-hour (presentations start at noon), locally held, lunchtime learning events. The $20 event fee for the HRTT Lunch and Learn includes the participant’s cost for the event, lunch and any materials.

Our next event will be held in mid-September and will feature a presentation by the law firm of Bowles Rice LLP regarding the key points employers need to know regarding Employee Discipline and Documentation.
