Students — get drawing!

The Beverly American Legion Auxiliary Post 389 is bringing back the Poppy Poster contest. With art teachers in the schools having such limited time with their students, there just isn’t time to include an additional project to the curriculum, so the Auxiliary is offering the project as a home activity. Any student that is enrolled in Beverly-Center Elementary, Waterford Elementary, Fort Frye High School, or Waterford High School is eligible to participate, as well as home schooled students within these areas. While the deadline for poster submission is April 28, it’s never too soon to get those ideas flowing and then get drawing!

The contest is divided into seven age groups: Grades 2-3; Grades 4 and 5; Grades 6 and 7; Grades 8 and 9; Grades 10 and 11; Grade 12; and special needs students.

Each poster has content rules to meet, as set by the Unit. The poster must be on 11 x 14 poster board, and drawing paper will not be accepted. A slogan of 10 words or less should be on the poster, but ‘little words’ such as ‘a’, ‘an’, ‘and’, and ‘the’ are not counted, the words ‘buddy’ and ‘buy’ cannot be used, and the words ‘American Legion Auxiliary’ must be used in the design of the poster and will not be counted as part of the 10-word limit. Each poster must also contain a picture of the red Flanders Field poppy. The United States flag may be used on the poster as long as there are no infractions of the flag code. Several forms of media may be used, including watercolors, crayons, powder oil paint, handmade paper cutouts, ink or texture, acrylics, pencils, and markers. The label “In Memoriam” from the red, veteran-made poppy cannot be used as part of the finished poster.

On the back of each poster, students must include the age group in which the poster should be entered, their name, address, age, and grade and the name of the school. Posters will be judged on appeal — its layout, message, and originality; artistic ability — design and color; and neatness. Submissions become the property of the American Legion Auxiliary, and through submission, the contestants and their legal guardians grant non-exclusive reproduction and publication rights to the submitted works and agree to have their names and artwork published for commercial use without additional compensation or permission. Most importantly, the poster can be the work of just one individual.

Read about Flanders Field for ideas for the poster or talk to a veteran. There is information available on the American Legion Auxiliary 389 Facebook page, or contact Rhonda Beebe. Remember, posters are due April 28, 2017 and may be dropped off at Wainwright’s Jewelry in Beverly.
