Raising money for mammograms

Dr. Abdi and Manijeh Ghodsi will once again open their Vienna home and swimming pool area for Camden Clark Foundation’s Pink by Poolside fundraiser from 7-10 p.m. Sept. 10.

Proceeds from the benefit will provide 95 percent of the funding for free mammograms, breast ultrasounds and diagnostics in the coming year through the Camden Clark Foundation, said Kim Couch, executive director. The foundation provides about 250 free breast cancer screenings to area underinsured and uninsured residents annually.

Couch said last year’s caterers are returning this year: DaVinci’s restaurant, Parkersburg Country Club, Valley Catering, Grand Pointe Conference and Reception Center and the Blennerhassett Hotel. Laura Evans and Company will once again provide the live music.

The theme for the event at 5201 Grand Central Ave. is inspired by fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer’s quote, “Anything is possible with sunshine and a little pink,” Couch said. “We will incorporate Lilly’s bright and colorful Palm Beach style in our decor and menu,” she said.

Tickets are $100 per person and include complimentary bar service and food. The foundation is looking for sponsorships and tickets (250 are available) can be purchased by contacting Couch at 304-424-2200 or email her at klcouch@ccmh.org

Will Lockhart is looking forward to singing at the Smoot Theatre as a member of Gentleman’s Rule at 8 p.m. Aug. 22.

Lockhart, 26, of Bloomington, Ind., has seen shows at the Smoot and has relatives in Wood County. His father, Roger, is a 1974 graduate of Parkersburg South High School.

The seven-man a cappella group has been busy this year producing music videos and its third album, “The Walk,” set for release in October.

The singing group performed in Belgium and the Netherlands in April and is scheduled to open for a Jay Leno show on Sept. 25 in Rochester, Minn.

Gentleman’s Rule sings all genres of music, from country to soul, rock, hip-hop and rhythm and blues, Lockhart, a baritone, told me Thursday. “We have fans who are in high school and retired people,” he said. “We don’t limit ourselves.”

The Parkersburg concert will feature songs from “The Walk,” including today’s hits and songs by Marvin Gaye and Barry White, along with songs from the group’s national PBS special last year.

Lockhart and all but one other member of Gentleman’s Rule are graduates of Indiana University where they sang together in a college group. For more information on the group go to gentlemansrule.com

“I am pumped to come to Parkersburg and excited to see the people I’ve met,” Lockhart said. The group will meet with Smoot audience members after the show.

Vu ja de Vineyards and Winery in Roane County is for sale. After starting the winery eight years ago, Bryan George is selling the family’s house, 38 acres, four vineyards, stocked pond, fruit trees, three wells and other items, he announced this week. George’s asking price is in the $350,000 range, he told me. The Georges are moving to Whitefish, Mont.,where Bryan plans to work in the real estate and mortgage business. He believes his property at 706 Reedyville Road, Spencer, about a half hour drive from Ripley, is perfect for another winery, a farm or bed and breakfast business. George, 37, said he appreciates the support his business and family have received from West Virginians. “West Virginia is a gorgeous state and has the most generous people,” he said. For more information go to Vu ja de’s Facebook page or contact Bryan at bryanorganic@gmail.com

Sophia Colombo of Parkersburg recognized the photograph on the wall at Angelo’s Steak and Pasta in Myrtle Beach, S.C., as she and 15 family members dined recently at the restaurant. Near the cashier’s station was a photograph of a man standing outside Angelos Brothers Confectionery, which once stood at 800 Seventh St. in Parkersburg. Francis Angelos of Parkersburg had given copies of this same photograph to family members, including his daughter Sophia. Angelos Brothers was owned and operated by Francis’ father, George, and his uncle Pete and the photograph was probably from the 1940s. Angelo Antonucci, owner of Angelo’s Steak and Pasta and a native of Steubenville, Ohio, wasn’t sure who brought the Angelos Brothers photograph to his restaurant but he apparently likes the name, Francis said.
