Cookbooks as gift ideas for holidays

Looking for a present for a loved one on your list? Are they interested in cooking? Several new cookbooks recently released would be the perfect gift!

Anyone interested in the vegan diet or just wanting to try a healthier take on snacks would enjoy “The Vegan Divas Cookbook” by Fernanda Capobianco (HarperWave, $27.99.)

Vegan Divas Bakery on New York City’s Upper East Side releases a cookbook collecting favorite offerings, both sweet and savory. Brunch recipes, sweet snacks, delicious desserts, party snacks, breads and even soups, sandwiches and salads, all with a vegan twist are offered in this welcoming cookbook. There’s Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies, Pumpkin Scones and Gluten-Free Raspberry Cheesecake in a Glass to name a few!

Anyone wanting to try French cooking or those who just love the delicious pastries would love to try “The French Cook: Cream Puffs and Eclairs” by Holly Herrick (Gibbs Smith, $21.99.) This bright pink book offers both sweet and savory takes on the two pastries. Savory Cream Puffs have recipes like Seafood Pot Pies, Savory Eclairs have recipes like Small Eclairs with Avocado Mousse, Bacon and Tomatoes, Sweet Cream Puffs offer recipes like Cinnamon-Spiced Pumpkin Pecan Cream Puffs and Sweet Eclairs have recipes like Small Cannoli Eclairs. Recipes look a bit more involved, so this seems like a good book for an experienced baker.

Recipes come from the Heartland in “The New Midwestern Table” by Amy Thielen (Clarkson Potter, $35.) The host of a new Food Network series, “Heartland Table,” Minnesota native Thielen brings 200 recipes of the region. There’s plenty of Southern cooking books out there, but not as much Midwestern, some home cooks wanting to try something new may love this one! There plenty of appetizers, soups and salads, fish dishes, chicken dishes, meat dishes, sides, potato dishes, sweets, baking, brunch recipes and even projects like jams and jellies. Dishes like Seven-Layer Russian Salad and Classic Chicken and Wild Rice Hotdish bring homey comfort, no matter what region you are from!

A New York institution releases a cookbook that could easily double as a coffee table book with “The Gramercy Tavern Cookbook” by Michael Anthony (Clarkson Potter, $50.) Famous for seasonal cooking and using local ingredients, the New York restaurant has earned six James Beard awards and many other accolades. Danny Meyer goes into the history of the restaurant and the recipes include lovely vibrant photos of both the dish and the restaurant. It is truly a feast for the eyes and stomach. Recipes are divided by season, and since we are going into winter, we are looking at recipes like Ruby Red Shrimp with White Beans and Kale Salsa Verde and Duck Breast with Confit and Quinces.

For those wanting to eat healthier, look into “Giada’s Feel Good Food” by Giada De Laurentiis (Clarkson Potter, $32.50.) The Food Network chef and cookbook author shares her tips for excercise, morning routines, skin care, makeup, nails and hair as well as recipes for healthy options for breakfast, juice and smoothies, lunch, snacks, dinner and dessert. There’s dishes like Strawberry-Mint Omelet, Double Berry Smoothie, Kale and Mushroom Wrap, Cinnamon Kettle Corn, Spiced Apple Chips, Grilled Scallops with Orange-Scented Quinoa, Pork Tenderloin with Honey-Mustard Sauce and even Avocado-Chocolate Mousse with Raspberries. There’s 120 recipes to choose from that will taste good and be healthier for you!

Part autobiography and part cookbook is “L.A. Son” by Roy Choi (HarperCollins, $29.99.) Starting from his birth in South Korea to his arrival in Los Angeles, to working at a family restaurant, to gang violence and finally, to culinary school and beyond, the stories of Choi’s life are accompanied by recipes for home cooks to try. There’s Kimchi, Twice-Cooked Duck Fat Fries, to Kung Pao Chicken Papi Style and Korean-Style Braised Short Rib Stew. This is a fascinating look into one chef’s life and there’s plenty of food to tempt your taste buds with more than 85 L.A.-inspired recipes.
