Benefit scheduled for Ohio couple

A benefit meal and silent auction for Bob and Donna Brooker is scheduled for Oct. 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church hall. Roasted chicken or ham meals will be served for a free will donation.

Proceeds from the event will help defray the Brooker’s current medical expenses.

Donations of items for the silent auction are still being accepted and are being collected by Charlene Wagner, (740) 984-4000, and Chris Baker, (740) 984-2638.

FIRE SAFETY POSTER WINNERS HONORED

These Beverly-Center elementary students were chosen as first- and second-place winners of the 2013 Fire Prevention Poster Contest, with this year’s theme, “Prevent Kitchen Fires”: First Grade – Kyndal Buchanon and Janessa Ross; Second Grade – Alaina Snodgrass and Alyssa Duskey; Third Grade – Katie Schaad and Jack Duffey; Fourth Grade – Carlee Nelson and Julia Bee; Fifth Grade – Lydia Klinger and Cassie Heiss.

Winning students and their families were invited to be guests at the fire station’s fire prevention pancake breakfast on Oct. 13. An award presentation for all the winners was held at the end of the breakfast.

Fire prevention coordinator was Josh Kasun.

LEGION AUXILIARY HOLDS BOOK DISTRIBUTION

The Auxiliary Unit of Russell Chadwick American Legion Post 389 held its first RIF book distribution of the school year for K-6 students at Beverly-Center Elementary School on Oct. 11. Through the efforts of the auxiliary and other local sponsors, the Reading is Fundamental program continues to provide free books to children in local schools.

Children have the chance to come to the distribution three times a year to choose their own book, to keep, free of charge. his year, the theme of “courage” was discussed. Susanne Burchett, RIF coordinator, shared the book “Courage” by Bernard Waber and encouraged students to think of their own experiences with courage and add them to her display board.

Assisting Burchett with the distribution were auxiliary members Sue Mincks and Beverly Fulmer.
