I love picadillo so I tried the recipe featured from Sol Food, a Puerto Rican restaurant in San Rafael, Ca.

A dish using hamburger and a variety of spices and tomato juice, it is then served over rice and with sweet plantains. The day I made it my local grocery didn’t have any sweet plaintains (or green ones for that matter) so I only served it over rice, but it was still delicious.

I was thrilled to note that my local store carried recaito, a sauce one usually has to make that requires a lot of ingredients, and was canned. That made this dish a quick fix one busy weeknight that everyone enjoyed. If you can find the plaintains, sautee them in a bit of butter for an extra treat.

“The Funky Finds of Flavortown” is published by William Morrow. It is $21.99.
