Take border crisis seriously

In the Jan. 17 newspaper, Diane Dimond had a column on the cost of illegal immigrants to American taxpayers. Dimond does some math. At an $18 billion estimated cost to build the wall on the U.S. southern border, divided by the 328 million men, women and children in the U.S., the cost of the wall comes to $55 per person.

In the March 17 newspaper, Betsy McCaughey had a similar column where she broke down some more facts and figures. It costs a whopping $775 a day for each child housed at Florida’s Homestead Air Reserve Base. Each child has access to medical care, school and recreation. They stay on average 67 days before being released to a sponsor. That’s almost $52,000 per child.

Illegal immigration hit an eleven-year high of over 76,000 in February alone, even before the latest border surge. Homeland security spent $3 billion in 2018 sheltering and feeding illegals at the border.

Add to that the hundreds of millions being spent caring for unaccompanied teenagers in 130 shelters overseen by the department of Health and Human Services.

McCaughey concluded facts show we cannot afford not to build the southern border wall.

Readers should check out both excellent columns.

In the past two years, I.C.E. has made 100,000 arrests for assaults, 30,000 arrests for sex crimes and 4,000 arrests for homicides.

Therefore, President Trump was justified in declaring a national emergency and invoking the National Emergencies Act, since the House Democrats refuse to do their elected duty.

Article 10 of the U.S. Code, Section 284, grants the president the authority to support counter drug activities to counter trans-national organized crime.

Also under Article 10, section 284 (B) (7) grants the president authority for “construction of roads and fences and installation of lighting to block drug smuggling across international boundaries of the U.S.”

According to a CBS News poll, 72 percent of Americans approve President Trump’s stance on immigration and border security. Meanwhile, the Democrats refuse to even admit that we have a crisis on our southern border.

Sadly, the Democrats have put their hatred of Trump over the welfare of the American people. Nothing will change until and unless the Democrats are voted out of office in 2020.
