Getting at the truth

The Jan. 7 News and Sentinel included a full page of well written, interesting and factual letters to the editor. Three of those letters were aimed at correcting some lies and distortions about some very important subjects, which have recently crept into the national dialog.

Patrick Radcliff of Vienna clearly stated who got screwed with the recent Republican tax cut. Short term, the rich will get richer. Long term the middle class will cease to exist while the rich get richer. Then there’s that growing budget deficit Republicans complained about for eight years under Obama. The explosive growth in the deficit began with a Republican tax cut in 2001, which was quickly followed by 9/11, which was quickly followed by war in Afghanistan which was quickly followed by war in Iraq. Those wars were not funded by tax increases. The cost was added to the national credit card. That triggered the run-away deficit Republicans condemned Obama for. Now Republicans think the new 1.5 trillion-dollar deficit addition (which is part of their latest big tax cut) is a great idea. Unbelievable.

George Banziger of Marietta explained that weather and climate are not the same. A short cold snap in January doesn’t mean global warming isn’t happening. Mr. Banziger should send a copy of his letter to that brainless dolt in the White House. Now, there’s a man who needs help understanding the difference between weather and climate.

Don Lowe of Vienna suggested there might be “Treason among us.” The Mueller investigation already has four criminal indictments and two guilty pleas under its belt and they’re just getting warmed up. Trump says he has no connection to Russian political activities but 26 different members of his election and White House staff have been identified as persons of interest caught dealing with the guys from Moscow. Congressional Republicans are now scratching like cats in a litter box trying to help Trump cover up his Russian dirt. Treason? Let Mueller’s investigation continue and we’ll find out if we have any treason.

There are 320 million citizens in these United States. They deserve to know how the Russians influenced our 2016 election and if anyone working with Donald Trump helped them in any way. Our citizens deserve the truth. All of the truth. They deserve much more than a Donald Trump denial.
