Setting the record straight

I am a Waverly parent with two young children who attend the school. I have attended every Board of Education meeting since November and been very active in the fight to keep Waverly open. The editorial written was absolutely appalling and full of half-truths. Let me take this time to set a few things straight.

First, our students are not “unnecessary” as they were called in the letter, the school they attend is far more than just a building, and it is the students and staff that make that school such a wonderful place to attend. And I take offense that someone would talk about any child in that manner.

Second, the Waverly community did not bully anyone. We were respectful through every BOE meeting we sat through. We are just a group of people standing up for what they know is right after having our school wrongfully targeted by the BOE. We are being attacked for standing up and doing what we believe is right for our children, just as the Williamstown community is doing for their children now and it is uncalled for.

Third, our community had nothing whatsoever to do with the BOE voting down the Fenton property as a possible site for a new Williamstown Elementary. Every parent, grandparent, teacher, etc. that has stood up and spoken to the board has been sure to say that by asking for the BOE not to close our school, that does not mean we don’t want Williamstown to get the school they so desperately need. Why our community is being targeted as part of the reason they didn’t get the location they wanted for the new school is unknown to me because we have all been very supportive throughout this entire process.

We were just as shocked as the Williamstown community by the No vote on the land and we will be at the next BOE meeting in Williamstown to support them getting their new school and all it involves.
