Climate consensus

Dr. James Lawrence Powell, Ph.D. in geochemistry educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Professor of Geology at Oberlin College for 20 years, conducted a lengthy study of the scientific literature on anthropogenic (human-caused) global climate change and found the following:

Of 24,210 peer-reviewed articles by 69,406 authors, only 5 articles by 4 authors reject man-made global warming. That’s 1 author in 17,352 or 0.006 percent of authors. The 5 articles have only one citation, a citation regarding a correction of an error.

What this translates to is that the global climate science community consensus on man-made global warming exceeds 99.99 percent. Forget the 97 percent information you’ve heard for so long, this is conclusive.

Though his scientific research has also inspired Powell to produce a work of fiction imagining “the Great Warming,” his credentials led him to be appointed by both presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush to the National Science Board.

Any good scientist will tell you that scientific inquiry does not deal in absolutes or certainties, but this is as close to absolute certainty as you can get when dealing with degrees of probability and correlations between variables.

Insurers, investors, money managers, market professionals, bankers, financiers and corporations like the retail giant Walmart are all acting on this reality. The Pentagon has called climate change a top national security threat and global priority. Just because a minority of our overall populace, primarily in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, elected a science denier who is in turn appointing science deniers to his cabinet, this does not mean that we give up the fight for our future. Republicans are the only conservative political party in the world to deny the settled science of climate change.
