Grossly incongruous words

Incongruous is a word that I had never used until now, but an article in the News and Sentinel begs its use. The article “ACLU sues Utah,” includes a photo of two men and a child with the following statement: “Plaintiffs Matthew Barraza, left, looks on as his husband Tony Milner, right, picks up their son Jesse, 4, following a news conference Tuesday in Salt Lake City.”

The dictionary defines incongruous as an adjective with synonyms of discrepant, unsuitable, ridiculous, ludicrous, absurd, inharmonious, discordant, contrary and contradictory.

It is my contention that the statement accompanying the photo is grossly incongruous – on all levels.
