Federal shutdown is insane

In Jonah Goldberg’s column last week, he calls Ted Cruz the GOP’s Obama. I think he completely misses the point. I don’t care if Cruz is elite or not, superior or not, gauche or not. I do care he does his job. After an election his job is to work with the duly elected leader to fix the problems that we have as a nation, not make them worse.

When President Lincoln was elected, many people disagreed with him on the issue of slavery. However, when people faced the question of whether there was one country, we fought a war to answer that question with a yes, we are one nation.

Right now, we are in a fragile economic recovery time. Some have recovered more than others: Corporate profits have grown by 171 percent under Obama, but the American worker has seen his and her wages falling to a record low.

We are one country – Ted Cruz needs to put his impeccable educational credentials to work for all the people, not just to increase corporate profits. In the Preamble to the Constitution, it states , “We, the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” And the Constitution goes on to say, “Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”

The governed elected a president by a majority vote, both the popular vote and the Electoral College. Those who “the governed” elected to represent them passed the Affordable Health Care by a majority vote, and it has been upheld by the Supreme Court. It’s law. Obama is president. Majority rules. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. The House has tried unsuccessfully to overturn the Affordable Care Act 42 times.

This is insane. It’s insane Head Start kids can’t go to school. It’s insane our research programs are cut. It’s insane our NASA, national parks, and veterans services are cut. We need Ted Cruz to be a sane and responsible representative. The budget is the budget. No more. No less. No tag-along effort to hamstring the government is necessary. There are other ways to deal with that besides shutting down the federal government. That is insane.
