Celebrating our diversity

Another Multi-Cultural Festival is history and I am again humbled by the success of this event. There were doubts when the organization formed almost 20 years ago that the Festival would ever materialize, much less be a roaring success like it is. It is wonderful to be a part of a community event that brings together so many people from different walks of life at an event that promotes such good will.

I think that sometimes people believe an event of this size just “happens” or that some unknown entity bankrolls the whole thing. Nothing could be further from the truth. We, meaning the Board of Directors, have already begun the planning for 2014. Two years ago, the leadership of the MOVMCF was passed to Rick Rubin and he has done a fabulous job at coordinating all of the elements that go into an event of this size. Kudos to him and to the rest of the Board for being so mindful of the needs of the Mid-Ohio Valley.

Fund-raising continues every day of the year because we are still searching for those elusive $10,000 and $20,000 sponsors, but our sponsors are loyal, with many of them supporting our efforts from Day One.

When we survey folks at the festival, asking how many years they have attended, there are always people who say they have been there every year and would never consider missing it. There are people who plan their vacations to come home to Parkersburg on the Festival weekend. I can’t begin to express how satisfying that is to me.

Blessings come in many forms and for the Mid-Ohio Valley and for me, personally, they have come through the Multi-Cultural Festival, everyone who pours their heart and soul into it, and, certainly this year – their blood, sweat, and tears. Congratulations to the Mid-Ohio Valley for seeing the beauty of diversity.
