Liberty — now more than ever

The recent school shootings in Connecticut were a tragedy beyond comprehension. As a knee-jerk reaction, there is a renewed call for more gun control even though we already have more than 2,000 gun laws on the books. It’s already illegal to murder people. Does anybody really believe that if gun ownership was illegal, criminals would comply with that law?

Proponents of gun control say that assault weapons should be banned because they are not necessary for hunting or self-defense. For the real reason for the Second Amendment, let’s look to the words of our founders. George Washington: “Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance; they are the people’s liberty’s teeth.”

Thomas Jefferson: “The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”

The Second Amendment was not written to preserve our rights of hunting and self protection; it was included in our Constitution so that we could protect ourselves, if necessary, from and out-of-control federal government. With the present administration’s obvious disdain for our Constitution, the Second Amendment has never had more importance.
