Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

UP: To Parkersburg officials’ decision to offer free admission at the City Park pool and Southwood Park pool as the Splash Pad remains closed for repairs and inspection. As the manufacturer works to make right — at no cost to the city — the component that has been linked to injuries in a few children, local residents still have a fun option for cooling off close to home.

UP: To news of an interline agreement between Contour Airlines and American Airlines that will let local residents travel just about anywhere, from the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport. Details remain to be cemented, but in a few months, it will be possible to book a ticket, park your car here in Wood County (for free) and travel through Charlotte Douglas International Airport with one ticket. “You can go literally anywhere, and you can buy the one ticket and your bag will go there with you,” said MOV Regional Airport Manager Glen Kelly.

UP: To Matt and Kim Richards of Elizabeth, who have taken the bull by the horns and lead Wirt County’s Quick Response Team in a way that has become a model for other counties. They took the initiative in working toward changes in the guidelines for the grant that funds the program, so that the team can help those who want help regardless of their level of intoxication, rather than after an overdose only. “It really gave us that freedom to respond to those people as well,” said Matt Richards. “If somebody wants help, they shouldn’t have to almost die just to get it.”
