Options: Show support with Small Business Saturday
Those of you braving the Black Friday shopping crowds today might wish you had waited a day — stayed out of the herd, as it were — to shop with a little less of the madness, on Small Business Saturday.
Each year, smaller, locally owned, brick and mortar retailers take advantage of the Saturday after Thanksgiving to remind shoppers of the many advantages to stopping by the establishments owned by our friends and neighbors.
Certainly there is nothing wrong with spending a little money with the big guys — they employ local folks, too — but on Small Business Saturday, it is likely you will be shopping with the owner, general manager, head salesperson, perhaps even the maker of the products for sale … all wrapped into one person. And much of the money spent on Small Business Saturday is almost immediately and directly reinvested into our communities.
Better still, the items found at many of our local small businesses are not available just anywhere. The owners of these shops went into business to provide something shoppers could not find with the national chain stores.
So if you manage today not to be trampled by the crowds, consider looking tomorrow for a few special items on your list at the many small, locally owned businesses here in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Of course, the business owners (and their families) will be grateful, but you might just discover a treasure that keeps you coming back.
(No one said you had to SPEND small on Small Business Saturday … or that you needed to stop at just one Saturday, either.)
Good luck out there, ladies and gentlemen. Happy shopping!
