Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down
UP: To Parkersburg South High School alumnus Ben Wilson, who has been named a drum major for West Virginia University’s marching band. Wilson called finding out about the selection “pure joy and excitement,” and he is right to be thrilled and proud of the accomplishment. We look forward to watching him help lead the Pride of West Virginia this season.
UP: To the Belpre Homecoming Committee’s quick adjustment after a scheduling error left them without the usual carnival thrill rides for this week’s festivities. Replacing those rides with inflatables and bouncing set ups — provided through Meigs County Inflatables–might just mean the kids are even more tired out after some time spent at Civitan Park.
UP: To news from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection that cleanup efforts for part of the former Johns Manville industrial site in Vienna are expected to be successful enough that there will be “no issue with the installation of a boat ramp or any other recreational concerns,” according to Mayor Randy Rapp.
UP: To 67,000 new West Virginia voters registered so far in time for this fall’s general election. More than 22,000 of those new voters are high school students, according to Secretary of State Mac Warner. He said the efforts by high school administrators, teachers and civic engagement groups “demonstrates our collective effort to give young people a voice in their state and local government.” Let us hope that energy carries through to the polls in November.
