Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

UP: To the grand reopening of the Salvation Army of Parkersburg’s Red Shield Shelter this week, though there is still work to be done. “We’re not quite ready for families and the expansion for the women’s rooms is soon to begin,” said Maj. Matt Riley. The work so far has increased bed space in the men’s dormitory from 22 to 32, making more room for the Salvation Army to carry out its mission of “doing the most good.”

UP: To citizens who called the Ritchie County Sheriff’s Office with information that “got us started in the right direction” to lead to the indictment of 20 people, all but one of whom was charged as part of the same drug investigation. “Almost daily do we get people calling us, and these are concerned people in Ritchie County, about drug activity,” said Sheriff Terry Snodgrass. “The citizen information helped.”

UP: To this weekend’s Mid-Ohio Valley Multi-Cultural Festival at Parkersburg City Park. The free celebration of cultural and ethnic diversity is an incredible place to experience food, art, music and dance that might not be everday fare here in the Mid-Ohio Valley. It is the perfect place to spend a day or two learning, participating and enjoying.

DOWN: To the very fact that state and national parks, wildlife organizations and now the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources have to remind people not to feed the bears. Here in West Virginia, the there are actually folks leaving out scraps and pet food for black bears. These creatures are not Yogi, ladies and gentlemen. This is almost as much of a head-shaker as the need to ask people not to attempt to take selfies with the animals.
