Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

UP: To programs such as the one that allows inmates at the Noble Correctional Institution in Caldwell, Ohio, to use their skills to build bicycles for local children in foster care. One participant in the program was frank about his reasons for doing so: “My past doesn’t reflect on a positive person, so anything I can do to get some social redemption and show that I’m not a waste of space helps me to sleep better at night,” he said. “Honestly, it’s a privilege to be in a place like this and serve. I hope that whoever gets these can get a small amount of the joy I got as a kid on a bike.”

UP: To local holiday events such as the annual Gingerbread Festival at the Blennerhassett Hotel. Proceeds from the People’s Choice competition this year will go to the Habitat for Humanity of the Mid-Ohio Valley, which helps folks put their own, real, roofs over their heads. The creations are on display through Dec. 27, and the winner is determined by the amount of change in the banks at each entry.

UP: To National Speech and Debate Association 2017-2018 West Virginia Educator of the Year Michelle Talbot, from Parkersburg South High School. According to NSDA Executive Director J. Scott Wunn, Talbot “has provided outstanding leadership in helping students improve their communication skills, build confidence, and increase critical thinking skills. All of these skills will better prepare students for college, a career, and a successful life after school.” Congratulations!
