Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

UP: To a Vienna Public Library program to collect nonperishable food donations instead of monetary fines for overdue books, Nov. 14-18. With each donation equalling $1 in fines, the effort could garner lots of food for the local food bank, and encourage folks to do some good while returning those overdue books.

UP: To Lubeck Elementary School students who thanked local firefighters by creating handwritten cards and letters that showed their appreciation for all the time and effort put into fighting the IEI warehouse fire. The students art work and notes are likely more precious to those firefighters than any official commendation.

UP: To the christening of the U.S. Navy’s USNS Hershel “Woody” Williams (ESB-4) to honor the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient from the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. Williams, 94, of Ona, was also presented with a Congressional Record Statement commemorating the event.

UP: To the extra hour of sleep we will all gain when we “fall back” and turn the clocks backward one hour, as daylight-saving time ends tonight (well, at 2 a.m. Sunday). Enjoy the extra rest, folks; the holiday rush is fast approaching, and we’re going to need it.
