Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

UP: To the Parkersburg Elks Club for its delivery of more than 900 dictionaries to Wood County third-graders. The books are meant to help support reading and literacy, but also to help kids with their grammar and research skills. It will also give them a reference book to take home with them at the end of the school year.

UP: To the level of economic development happening in Belpre. Speaking of only one new restaurant in particular, Karen Waller, executive director of the Belpre Area Chamber of Commerce, said “I think it’s going to be a wonderful addition to the development on that end of Washington Boulevard.” It is exciting to see such positive news coming out of the business community there. DOWN: To news that Belpre City Schools have reportedly seen so many cuts from state and federal funding that they may be forced to turn to local voters to ask them to approve another levy within the next couple of years. Treasurer Lance Erlwein says “we don’t have an expenditure problem, we have a revenue problem.”

UP: To an opportunity for students from several local schools to witness proceedings of the Ohio Supreme Court, which held session in the Marietta High School auditorium this week. Justice Patrick Fisher described the event as “the most important thing we do because people need to know how the courts operate and kids need to know that.”
