Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

UP: To the groups that participated in the United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley’s Day of Action Wednesday, volunteering to help local organizations and schools with special projections. “It is simply inspiring to see so many people willing to invest in our community by sharing their time and talent,” said executive director Stacey DeCicco.

UP: To the Washington County Wildcats Special Olympics team, which was sent off with a torch run that precedes this weekend’s Special Olympics events in Columbus. “It’s basically an honor and a privilege to run the torch run and then go compete in our events,” said Josh Donahue, 28, of Waterford. Good luck, and an enjoyable weekend, to all those who will participate.

UP: To the kinds of activities that keep local kids engaged, learning and outdoors during the summer months. The Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge provides the perfect example with its slate of activities ranging from Budding Artists to an upcoming Fluorescent Wildlife Night Hike. Organizations throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley do a fantastic job of complementing children’s formal educations with the kind of learning that cannot be replicated in a classroom.

DOWN: To predictions of record heavy traffic on the weekend before July 4, as many folks try to squeeze a four-day weekend out of one vacation day. Be patient folks — or alter your travel plans. And remember there are plenty of wonderful places to visit right here in West Virginia (and the Mid-Ohio Valley) that will cut your driving time considerably.
