Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

UP: To news of an agreement to cover health care benefits for retirees of the former Century Aluminum plant in Ravenswood. Pending court approval, $23 million will cover medical bills and help with future healthcare costs for members of Steelworkers Local Union 5668. It is encouraging to note that while the two sides “were mortal enemies at the start,” according to former employee Karen Gorrell, ” … I think in the end, we grew to have a mutual respect for each other. They put $23 million on the table when they didn’t have to.”

UP: To an agreement between DuPont and Chemours to also put some money on the table — $335.35 million each, to start — to resolve lawsuits pending in the class-action case involving exposure to C8. Though neither company has admitted any liability or fault, the action “gets the cogs turning and the wheels spinning,” as Washington, W.Va., resident Joe Kiger put it. Perhaps very soon Dan Turner, of DuPont Corporate Media Relations, will be correct, as this resolution “brings this matter to a close.”

UP: To a multi-state corporation with enough faith in the economy of the Mid-Ohio Valley to confirm two new sites in the coming year, and plans being considered for at least two other locations. Sheetz’s announcement early in the week spurred a buzz of excitement, and brought the prospect of renewed activity in one area, and a cleaned up city block in another neighborhood.

Speaking of activity — many local businesses and organizations have worked hard to put their best foot forward, which includes revamped branding and images. The Parkersburg News and Sentinel wants to be sure we are keeping up with that effort, especially as logos and nameplates have evolved. Representatives of companies and agencies who think we might not have access to the most up-to-date logos to include in our stories are encouraged to email those new images to editorial@newsandsentinel.com, with the subject line “Updated logo — (company/agency name).” Your help is greatly appreciated.
