Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

UP: To the opening of the Willow Island Hydroelectric Facility this week in Pleasants County. As power companies — and our region — try to diversify their sources of electricity, it is encouraging to know we have the resources to do so right here at home. This plant will generate 239,000 megawatt hours of electricity per year, potentially for 80 to 100 years.

UP: To local efforts to improve the lives of our teachers, such as that from the Hometown Heroes campaign at Peoples Bank. Teachers at Washington Elementary School now have a revamped lounge in which to relax and plan during the school day. “Things like this make it all worth it,” said teacher’s aide Kelly Ross.

DOWN: To the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which just cannot seem to let up on its assault against the coal industry and reasonably priced electricity, but had to be reprimanded by the Inspector General’s office for its failure to issue an immediate emergency order in the Flint, Mich. water crisis. Instead, the EPA waited a full seven months to act on an issue that was having immediate, dramatic negative health consequences for the children of Flint and surrounding areas. It was busy carrying out an agenda instead of doing its job.

UP: To upcoming Halloween and Trick-or-Treating events that will be enjoyed by Mid-Ohio Valley residents of all ages. Stay safe out there, everyone.
