Fight Hunger: Donate non-perishable items for worthy cause

Local organizations work hard all year to provide for those in need here in the Mid-Ohio Valley. But there are seasons in which the need grows, and with winter fast approaching, the Stop Senior Hunger Food Campaign aims to prepare for the inevitable bad weather by collecting nonperishable food items for senior shut-ins, now.

Mid-Ohio Valley residents can find collection bins at a number of local businesses, where they can drop off soup (in cans or pouches), tuna (in cans or pouches), oatmeal packets, peanut butter, crackers, fruit and vegetable cups, cans of potted meat and small bottles of water, to name just the most requested items. Small hygiene items may be donated, too.

Once local residents have generously donated the needed items, Comfort Keepers and Faithlink hope to fill 700 Blessing Bags to give to the folks on a distribution list determined by local senior citizens organizations.

Collection will continue through Dec. 31. While local residents will surely be asked to participate in several worthy donation drives this season, this one is relatively small, simple, and could be a life-saver to a shut-in who would not otherwise be able to get food when the rough weather hits.

And those who donate may even get a little back, if they choose to bring an item to The News and Sentinel’s Taste of Home Cooking Show Nov. 12. Bringing in a food item will mean $1 off a cookbook at the show.

Please consider giving an item or two this season. The folks who are able to prepare a meal for themselves when they might otherwise go hungry on a cold, snowy day will be grateful.
