Belpre Police

Belpre council members have a great deal to consider as they look at the possibility of adding an officer to the city’s police department, in order to cover a third shift. Given the need for such an extra layer of protection for the citizens of Belpre, it seems as though the greatest hurdle will be ensuring there is proper funding to add a tenth officer to the force.

Belpre Police Department officers work 12-hour shifts, and know they need a little extra help during the 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. stretch, when a great deal of illegal activity takes place. When an officer is off from his regular shift, leaving a gap in protection, those hours are a critical time during which to be certain all gaps are filled.

Belpre Councilman William Gilbert is right, of course, when he cautions the Police and Fire Committee must be certain finances are in place “so we don’t hire someone this year and have to fire them next year.” But once financial adjustments are made, council members should look at the hiring of a tenth officer as not just a shift-covering measure. It is a community enrichment and economic development decision as well.

Crime – particularly drug crime – can cause a ripple effect that leaves businesses hurting.

“Businesses will stop coming in” because of the growing drug problem and increased crime rates in the Belpre area, said Councilwoman Donna Miller. “We have got to do something to protect the city.”

Belpre police officers are already doing their best to protect their city. But they could use all the help they can get. If Belpre City Council can find a way to give it to them, council members should make that move as quickly as possible.
