Syria

Reports from the White House say an attack against Syria could come soon.

President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry said this week they have concluded Syria used chemical weapons against its own people.

While it’s probable Bashir al-Assad ordered the chemical attacks, no proof has been offered and, according to several news sources, there is no “smoking gun” that chemical weapons were used.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has said an international coalition against Iraq is envisioned, but now many European countries are backing away from what was at best lukewarm support for intervention. The Arab League also is against intervention, and Russia, which has warned against intervention, has moved warships into the region. But this apparently has not deterred Obama who has said the U.S. may act alone, if necessary.

For many years, former President George W. Bush and his administration have been condemned by many for going to war against Iraq under false pretenses in 2003. You may remember that an international coalition of nations united against Iraq was formed, based on evidence that country had weapons of mass destruction.

Now some of Bush’s fiercest critics, including Obama, want the United States to launch an attack against Syria based on far less evidence.

Obama appears determined to go to war against Syria. That attitude is as dangerous now as it was a decade ago.

Have we learned nothing during the past 10 years?
