There are many reasons to take advantage of the Parkersburg Homecoming, but at the top of the list would be the price of the majority of this weekend’s attractions – free.
And for what attendees will receive during the three-day festival that is a price hard to beat.
The music, as always the biggest pull, is top notch. It includes many local favorites, up and coming regional and national talent, and concludes Sunday evening with the easy rock sounds of America.
That, alone, would be enough to bring people to the riverfront area, but the music really is just a small part of what Homecoming weekend offers. The hardworking volunteers who work on this festival all year, make sure there is something that everyone can participate in and appreciate. There is, for example, a half-marathon race that features many world-class runners as well as many amateurs who just want to test themselves at that distance. The race also includes a two-mile run and walk that is a hit for people who just want to get out during the cool of Saturday morning and be a part of the festivities.
In addition, there are many other things the whole family can enjoy, such as a kids fishing derby, an open house hosted by the Mid-Ohio Valley Model Railroad Club, a downtown parade, and one of the best fireworks shows anywhere. That is just a small sampling of the activities. A full schedule with times and locations can be found in the newspaper’s annual special section, which was published on Thursday.
We hope people will take in part or all of Homecoming sometime during the weekend. School has already started in many Mid-Ohio Valley communities, and will shortly start in Wood County. This means days will be more hurried and weekends will be busy with football and other fall-like activities.
So Homecoming is an opportunity to enjoy a summer weekend the way it was meant to be spent – slow and easy.
