Mercedes Meigive Phillips

Mercedes Meigive Phillips, 90, of Parkersburg passed away July 2, 2018 at Wyngate of Parkersburg.

She was born on January 14, 1928 in Ameagle, WV and was the daughter of the late Juan Meigive and Maria Socorro Fernandez Meigive Paz who moved to the United States from Spain.

Mercedes graduated from Marshall University with her degree in education. She served as a teacher with Wood County Schools for several decades and enjoyed helping her many students at McKinley. She occupied her spare time with ceramics, basket making, reupholstering, and volunteering at Blennerhassett Island. She had traveled to Europe several times and to Spain to visit family. Mercedes was a very active member of First Presbyterian Church since 1956 and was involved in many church activities including Church Circles, the church choir and as the choir librarian.

Mercedes is survived by her daughter Suzanne Phillips Voelker (Matt) of Adelphi, MD, grandson Aleksander Volker, and nephews Mark and Anthony Midkiff and Brian and Craig Corry, Doug and Katrina VanBuskirk, and Allison Smith, adopted grandchildren Jon Grimm and special thanks to Karen Grimm.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Wendell D. Phillips, and three sisters Rose Meigive, Mary M Engeberg and Josephine M. Midkiff.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Friday at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Michael Seely officiating. Visitation will be from 5 – 8 on Thursday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to the Parkersburg Humane Society PO Box 392 Parkersburg, WV 26012.
