Dr. Elizabeth Frasher Norod

Dr. Elizabeth Frashure Norod died on February 10, 2018 at Cedar Grove Personal Care in Parkersburg. She was born in Belpre, Ohio in 1918 to parents, Wheatley and Floriene Plater Frashure. She graduated from Belpre High School in 1936 and from the former St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Parkersburg in 1943. That same year she married a New York State resident, Mr. Eugene Norod, and left Belpre with him to live in Geneva, New York and begin a career as a Registered Nurse (RN). At age 42, she developed a desire to teach nursing and began a bi-weekly commute to Rochester, New York to pursue higher education at the University of Rochester. Over time, she earned a Baccalaureate and Master’s degrees in Nursing and a Doctor of Education degree at the University and began a second career as a professional Nurse Educator.

For the remainder of her professional life, Dr. Norod’s primary interest was that of promoting and supporting education for nursing in colleges and universities. She spent one year as Project Director of a Federally-funded study of nursing in rural areas of seven upper mid-Western states and several years teaching Nursing majors in two different New York State Universities within communting distance of her home in Geneva. Her first teaching position was at Alfred University in Alfred, New York. The second was at the former State University of New York at Binghamton, New York. The last was at Keuka College in Keuka Park, New York where she was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Nursing Division. She brought her career as an Educator to an end when she left the College at age 67 to share retirement with her husband.

Mr. Norod died in 1986 and Dr. Norod returned to Belpre soon after his death. She was the last living member of her biological family and is survived by son David Norod, and grandchildren, Leah and Stephen, of Clifton, VA: nephew Mark Hibben of High Rolls, NM and son Matthew of Los Angeles, CA: niece Pamela Frashure Hutchinson as well as a number of nieces and nephews on the Norod side of her family. In additon to her husband, she was pre-deceased by her parents, her grandparents, Henry and Myrtle Blizzard Plater, with whom she lived in Belpre, her brother, Jack Frashure and her sister, Edith Frashure Hibben.

Upon returning to Belpre, Dr. Norod re-established her membership in Belpre Congregational Church, her childhood church home. She developed an interest in volunteerism and began a long term commitment to serving as a docent in the mansion of Blennerhassett Island. She also invested time and energy in volunteer work at Belpre’s Farmers’ Castle Museum and Education Center and at the Belpre Area Ministries’ Thrift Shop and Food Pantry. In additon to her church membership, she was a member of the Belpre Historical Society, Belpre High School Alumni Association, Friends of Blennerhassett, and P.E.O. Chapter Q.

Visitation will be at the Leavitt Funeral Home, Belpre on Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. At Dr. Norod’s request, there will be no funeral. Burial will be in the Plater-Frashure lot in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Parkersburg.
