John A. Martin

John A. Martin

A light went out of the world when John A. Martin, 66, left it suddenly November 8, 2017. He was pronounced dead at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital. He was born April 20, 1951 to the late William G. and Mary L. (Friedlander) Martin.

John was a Christian by faith and attended First United Methodist Church. He loved history and started his teaching career at Blennerhassett Junior High School (now middle school) the year it opened. He retired from there after sharing thirty-two years with faculty and students. He coached 7th and 8th grade boys track, 9th grade boys track for a couple of years, helped the girls track, and the wrestling program.

He was a founding member and the 1st President of the Julia-Ann Historic Association. He stayed very active with all the projects to preserve the history of the Victorian Era. He was very instrumental in organizing and directing tours and recently portrayed Peter G. VanWinkle at the ribbon cutting/dedication ceremony at River View Cemetery.

Preceding John in death in addition to his parents were two nephews Jamie Irvin and Bill Martin.

Surviving him are his sister Elizabeth “Beth” Pickrell; two brothers James W. “Bill” (Darlene) of Parkersburg and Daniel P. “Dan” (Nina) of Pennsboro; and three generations of nieces and nephews.

Also surviving are special friends Mike Minigh, Eric and Wavie Minigh of Parkersburg; Cindy Moore and the Hall Families of Clarksburg; and friends too numerous to mention in “The Neighborhood”.

John never met a stranger. He was loved by all who knew him. He was ever ready to give a helping hand. That followed him in death by being an organ donor.

The family is being assisted by Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
