Deborah Ruth Thornton

Deborah Ruth Thornton, 66, of LeRoy, WV, passed away November 9, 2017, in St. Mary’s Medial Center, Huntington, follow an extended illness.

She was born April 28, 1951, in Charleston, WV, the daughter of the late, Alfred Thornton and Hazel Sayre. Her brother, Donald Thornton, also preceded her in death.

Deborah was a 1969 graduate of Ripley High School, and then received a bachelor’s degree in education from Marshall University. She would remain a loyal alumnus of Marshall University throughout her life.

She began her teaching career at Kenna, and Ripley Elementary School’s. She spent several years at Ravenswood High School, but the majority of her career was at Ripley Middle School. She was a member of the National Education Association, the West Virginia Education Association and was a member and past president of the Jackson County Education Association.

Deborah was co-owner and operator of Parsons General Store, LeRoy, WV, and was an accomplish painter, enjoying mostly painting slates and saws. She also enjoyed the farming life.

Survivors include her companion of 44 years, Charles Parsons; brother and his wife, Kevin and Janet Thornton of Ravenswood; nieces, Jacqualin Thornton and Jessica (Chris) Burch; great nieces, Jamie Naylor and Jasmine Naylor and great nephew, Justus Burch.

Service will be 6 p.m. Sunday, November 12, 2017, at Casto Funeral Home Chapel, Evans, WV, with the Rev. Herman Robinson officiating. Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home. Private interment will be in the Baptist Grove Cemetery, Frozen Camp.
