Jewell C. Siegrist

Jewell Virginia Cain Siegrist, 89, of Creston, WV, died peacefully at home, on August 13, 2017. She was born at home in Big Bend, WV on June 12, 1928, a daughter of the late Everett and Eva Starcher Cain.

She graduated from Calhoun County High School, May 18, 1945, Grantsville, WV. She graduated from Glenville State College, Glenville, WV with a degree in teaching. She received her Master’s +30 in Education from West Virginia University University, Morgantown, WV.

She met her husband, James Paul Siegrist, “Paul” while attending Glenville State College. They were married Aug. 29, 1948, and had four children: Gary, Ron, Glen, and Paula.

She was a homemaker, worked at Hercules Powder, and taught at Pearisburg High School, Pearisburg, VA; Washington County, OH; Wirt County High School, Elizabeth, WV; Cairo High School, Cairo, WV; Harrisville High School, Harrisville, WV; and Calhoun County High School, Grantsville, WV. Plus, she had been a high school girls basketball coach. She retired to their farm at Creston Heights, Creston, WV.

She was a member of the WV Silver Haired Legislature for a few years. She attended Brooksville EUB, Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, and Snyder Chapel, as well as, others over her lifetime.

She was an avid West Virginia Mountaineer fan. Her interest included reading, feeding and watching the birds, and having a flower garden. Some of her favorite flowers were roses, tulips, peonies, lilacs, pansies, and hyacinths.

She is survived by four children: Gary, Ron (Vicki), Glen (Charlotte), and Paula; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Also, surviving are her siblings: Francis (Donna) and Joe Cain.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, James Paul Siegrist (July 13, 2015).

Funeral services will be held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, WV at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 20, 2017. Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017 from 6-8 p.m. as well as one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will be in McCray Cemetery at Creston, WV. In lieu of flowers, the Siegrist family requests that donations be made to Alzheimers or a charity of your choice.
