Ella Margaret Freed
Mrs. Ella Margaret Freed died peacefully the morning of August 1, 2017. She was 94 years old. She resided at the Westminster Oaks Health Care Center in Tallahassee, Florida.
Born November 7, 1922, in Belpre, Ohio, to Carroll and Ethel Archer, she graduated from Parkersburg High School in West Virginia and one year of college in Marietta, Ohio, before entering the U.S. Navy during WWll. She attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer during her service, 1943 to 1946. Her duty station was Washington, D.C., keeping track of ship movements.
She married Van Russell Freed on November 27, 1946. Most of her married life was spent in Buckhannon, West Virginia, where she worked at W.Va. Wesleyan College as a secretary.
Besides raising her two sons and several dogs, she loved to travel, read mystery/spy novels and was an avid bridge player. She had taken pilot training on the Piper Cub, was a hospital volunteer and a proficient crossword enthusiast.
Known as Maggie to many, she was a gentle, kind soul with a sweet smile who will be missed by all who knew her.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Russ, her sister, Irene Howard and her beloved son Richard Carroll Freed.
Survivors include eldest son Van Russell Freed Jr., (Peggy) Tallahassee, Fla.; daughter in law, Cathy Wiant Freed, Vienna, W.Va.; grandsons, Ryan Freed, (Stephanie) St. Petersburg, Fla., and Matthew Freed, (Maricon Ong) Jinzhou, China; great grandchild, Sophia Carroll Freed, St. Petersburg, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
Family only graveside service will be held at a latter date.
