Martha Helen Garrett

Martha Helen Garrett, 86, of Parkersburg, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2017, at the Camden Clark Medical Center. She was born February 8, 1931, in Portland, Indiana, a daughter of the late Guy and Irene Hoskins Heniser.

Martha worked as an auditor for Commercial Bank until her retirement. She was a longtime member of Stephenson United Methodist Church and the Gordon Butcher Sunday School class. She served numerous roles in the church, most notably as President of the United Methodist Women and delegate to the West Virginia Annual Conference. In 1991 she was named Outstanding Conference Chairperson of the Year by the Health and Welfare Program Department, a department of the General Board of Global Ministries. Additionally, she donated her time to the Burlington United Methodist Children’s Home. She also served on the Greater Mid-Ohio Valley Chamber of Commerce board and their Education Committee.

Martha is survived by her husband of 68 years, Don A. Garrett; four sons, Gregory (Sharon) Garrett of Parkersburg, Pete (Randy) Garrett of Scarborough, Maine, Mark (Della) Garrett of Knoxville, TN, Doug (Bev) Garrett of Parkersburg; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Garrett, Angie Sayre, Ryan Garrett, Amy Garrett, Jeff Garrett, Carlynn Keilty and Matthew Garrett; eleven great grandchildren; a niece (Lisa Richardson) and nephew (Jon Ross). In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters.

Martha loved her family deeply. Family gatherings in her presence were always filled with laughter. Anyone who knew Martha can probably recall numerous “conversations” about the accomplishments of her family. Her pride was unmatched. She made personalized holiday/birthday greeting cards for her grandchildren that will always be cherished, sending them to various locations across the country … always on time. Even at age 86, the tech-savvy Martha kept in touch with her extended family via Facebook and email.

We are grateful for her faith, unselfishness, support, encouragement and limitless love. She was everything to our family. We miss her dearly.

A celebration of Martha’s life will be held Saturday, July 1, 2017, at the Leavitt Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 12-1 p.m. The service will begin at 1 pm, with Reverend Mona Jackson officiating.
