Gladys V. Byers

Gladys Virginia Byers, 90, of Parkersburg, passed away March 10, 2017, at her residence. She was born January 24, 1927, at Parkersburg, a daughter of the late Warren A. and Alcinda Finch Robinson.

Gladys was a January 1945 Parkersburg High graduate and in the 1960’s was a news reporter writing the Ravenswood News Column for the former Parkersburg Sentinel. She had been a member of First United Methodist Church, Ravenswood, until 1993 when she moved to Parkersburg and became a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. She had also been active in the Lakeview Estates Social Club.

She had been actively involved in her church work, not only on the local level, but also, on the district level where her work included serving as President of United Methodist Women and board member for Crossroads. For the United Methodist Conference, she served on several councils and committees and authored one chapter in the book, “The Women Came Early,” a history of women in the WV Conference. For the Jurisdiction, she had served on several committees, including the Search Committee for the Quadrennial Meeting, where she served as Registrar.

She was the creator, editor and publisher of The Fourth Quarter, a newsletter for those in the last quarter of life. She published four issues per year reaching several hundred readers.

She enjoyed world traveling to such destinations as Bahamas, Alaska, Newfoundland, Mexico, Hawaii, Latvia, Estonia and Russia.

Gladys is survived by her husband, Charles R. Byers; her daughter, Angela Lynn Byers of Lusby, Maryland; her son, George J. Byers (Janet) of Vienna; one sister, Janet Johnson (Gordon) of Vienna; three granddaughters, Pamela Deel (David) of Leon, W.Va., Brandy LeQuire (John) of Clayton, N.C., and Brittany Byers of Conway, S.C.; five great-grandchildren, Isabelle, Samuel and Abigail Deel and William and Caleb LeQuire.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, William Alan Byers; son, Robert Alan Byers; sisters, Audra Robinson, Edith Feick and Freda Robinson.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at Vaughan Funeral Home, 1010 Murdoch Ave., Parkersburg. Reverend Pamela S. Shuman and Pastor Lisa Taylor will officiate and burial will be in Ravenswood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
