Donald LeRoy ‘Scotty’ Scothorn

Donald LeRoy “Scotty” Scothorn, 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Dec. 31, 2014, at his home in Miramar Beach, Fla.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Mary Joan (Jo) Scothorn; two daughters, Martie Parker of Wylie, Texas, and Becky Scothorn of Miramar Beach, Fla.; two sons, Stewart D. of South Lake, Texas, and Dr. Donald M. (Mac) of Roanoke, Va.; his sister, Caroline; brother, Lee; and several grandchildren.

Scotty was raised in Jetmore, Kan., became a star basketball player and received a basketball scholarship to Colorado State University. There as Captain he took his team to second place in the National AAU Basketball Tournament. Following graduation in 1952 he became Assistant Coach for the then “Aggies” when they became the first CSU team to play in the NCAA Tournament.

In 1954 he received a 1st Lieutenant Commission in the U.S. Army and served from 1955 to 1957 in the Army Ordnance Corps at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. Following service to his country he moved his family to Hamilton, Mont., where he served as executive vice president of Ravalli County Bank and then spent 21 years as president, director and owner of First State Bank of Stevensville while being a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. While in Montana he was also a member of the Bagdad Shriners Club and Elks Lodge.

In 1979 Scotty moved his family to Parkersburg, W.Va., when he became executive vice president of finance at Ravens Metal Products. While in Parkersburg he also served as president and CEO of Commercial Banking and Trust Company, director of Commercial Bancshares, director of Farmers and Merchant’s Paden City and Harrisville Banks and then president of WesBanco Bank until his retirement in 1999. While in West Virginia he served as a director for the Wood County Society of Crippled Children and Adults, the Boys & Girls Club of Parkersburg and the Salvation Army of Parkersburg, and also served on the Board of Directors for Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. After retirement and his move to Florida he was co-founder and CEO of Maxamillion Mortgage and a member of the Lions Club.

During his life Scotty made friends everywhere he went, many of whom he had regular contact with until his death. He was an avid reader and enjoyed sharing his love of reading by passing his books on to his friends and asking them to pass them on to someone else when finished, thus spreading the joy of friendship and reading.

At his request, there will be no funeral services.
