Richard Lee ‘Dick’ Holbert
Richard Holbert, 79, of Vienna, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Vienna, on Aug. 3, 2014.
He was born May 15, 1935, in Wood County, to the late Robert O. and Wilda Zickefoose Holbert.
Richard attended Wood County schools and played football at Parkersburg High School. He was offered a college scholarship but chose to leave high school early in his senior year and moved to Sandusky, Ohio, where he went to work at an automobile factory, New Departure, for several years. He later returned to the Parkersburg area and received his GED. He went to work at Universal Glass and worked there until it closed. He later was owner and manager of Coachman’s Inn on Seventh Street for many years until he retired.
He was the third of five sons born to his parents. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harry Wayne Holbert and Donald Gene Holbert. He was survived by his wife, Carole O’Brien Holbert of Vienna; loyal dog companion, Laddie; and daughter, Rebecca Holbert Uhl of Parkersburg. He leaves behind four grandsons and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Robert Carl Holbert of Milford, Ohio, and Thomas Dale Holbert (Kay); sister, Linda Holbert Lucky (Denver) of Vienna; sisters-in-law, Dixie Barnett Holbert (Harry) of Pine Grove, W.Va., and Ruth Green Holbert (Don) of Marietta; and numerous nephews and nieces scattered throughout the U.S. Locally, they are Jeff, Scott and Mike Holbert, Gene Holbert of Ravenswood, Tammy Holbert Wells of Pine Grove, and Malinda Lucky Flores of Williamstown.
At his request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. He always joked and said he wanted to go to college at WVU Medical School. He made arrangements to donate his body to the WVU Gift Registry in Morgantown and he is now in medical school. Dick loved and enjoyed his life to the fullest and will be missed by those who knew and loved him. Please celebrate his life your own way because he did it his way to the very end.
Memorials may be made in Richard’s memory to the Humane Society of Parkersburg, 29th and Poplar Street, Parkersburg, WV 26101.
