Lt. Col. Robert (Bob) Edward Evans

Lt. Col. Robert (Bob) Edward Evans, 80, died Monday, July 7, 2014, at Gulfpoint Plaza Nursing Home, finally succumbing to multiple medical ailments related to Parkinson’s Disease.

Bob Evans is survived by his wife, Marilyn Ramsey; and children from previous marriages, Sherry Brown, Cindy TePoel, Glenn Evans, Dan Evans (predeceased), John Evans, Amy Evans and Robert Evans Jr. He also leaves behind 15 grandchildren; and his sister, Mildred Evans (91).

Bob’s parents were Charles W. and Alviry Thrasher Evans. Bob was born and raised in the mountains of West Virginia, near St. Mary’s, and as the youngest of 14, was greatly influenced by his brothers and sisters. At 19, Bob enlisted in the Army for a three-year stint. Afterward, he stayed in the reserves and took advantage of his GI Bill to obtain his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

Bob then went back on active duty and was a graduate of Infantry Officers Basic and Advanced Courses; Fixed Wing Aviation Course, Rotary Wing Qualification Course, Airborne Course, and Command and General Staff College, and Jungle Warfare. Bob received many awards and decorations including the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Army Parachutist Badge and the Master Army Aviator Badge. In the Army, he flew helicopters, O-1 Bird Dogs, Convair 580s, and just about anything with a propeller. While on active duty, Bob became the president of the Fort Hood Flying Club. Bob is a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with distinction, three tours of duty. Bob retired from the military after 41 years of service. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the armed forces never left him, as friends and family will attest.

After retirement, Bob worked for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at the Hughes Technical Center in Pomona, N.J. He was part of a team of engineers that investigated the effects of lightning strikes on aircraft electronics equipment. The last 25 years of his retirement life were spent living in Rockport, with his wife Marilyn, building a boat storage business. Bob also found a passion for music and on most weekends could be found singing in ‘jam’ sessions throughout the area. He also developed lasting friendships with many people in the Rockport area.

Services will be held at Ingram Funeral Home in St. Marys (512 Second St.) On July 22, there will be a viewing from 2-8 p.m. On the following day, July 23, there will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Following the service, Bob will be interred in a family plot at Willow Island Cemetery in Pleasants County.
